A major MMA event is taking place in the Welcome Inn Hotel, Castlebar, on Sunday August 3, with some of the top competitors in the county coming to town to do battle for the inaugural West Cage Fighting Championships. This is an opportunity for fans of the sport to witness firsthand the spectacle of an all-out, full-scale MMA event. There will be 10 fights over the course of the night, with each contest being decided over three, three-minute, rounds.

Geraldine Lavelle, Tullycommons, Castlebar, suffered a spinal fracture that left her paralysed from her chest down. Having spent several weeks in the Mater Hospital in Dublin, where she underwent major surgeries on her neck and spine, she is currently in the National Rehabilitation Hospital undergoing intensive rehabilitation. Now a major fundraising campaign has been launched to raise money for Geraldine’s recovery.
